A320 Fuselage Assembly Cell – AIRBUS (GERMANY)

Solution Overview

This is a unique solution where two robots, mounted on mobile platforms, join the two final sections of the A320 fuselage in the final assembly line.

Project Objective

The objective of the project is to automate the drilling and riveting process for fuselage assembly, connecting the front and rear sections of the aircraft. This involves two robotic machines integrated directly into the assembly line process.

Challenge

The challenge is to perform the section joints using a One-Way Assembly (OWA) process while ensuring:

  • Hole positioning accuracy within ±0.4 mm
  • Full reachability around the circumferential joint of the 4,000 mm diameter fuselage section

Requirements

  • The machine operates on a mobile platform to allow seamless movement of sections within the assembly line.
  • Robots must have full accessibility around the fuselage joint for circumferential drilling.
  • The same head must perform multiple operations, including drilling, countersinking, sealant application, and interference-fit rivet (Hi-Lite) installation.
