A320 NEO Wing Box Assembly Cell – AIRBUS (ENGLAND)

Solution Overview

This is a unique solution for wing assembly that changes the traditional approach to handling the product (instead of placing the wing vertically, it is positioned horizontally). It combines two robots mounted on mobile platforms that move beneath the product, performing multiple operations.

Project Objective

The objective of the project is to automate several operations, such as:

  • Securing clamps to hold panels together
  • Drilling holes up to 1 inch in diameter (Ø25.4 mm) with axial forces up to 400 kg
  • After manually placing two-piece rivets, the robot locates the nuts and applies the final torque to those rivets.

Challenge

The challenge is to combine the movement of the platforms beneath the wing, as well as the automatic switching of operations to be performed on each mobile platform.

Requirements

  • The robot must have a special head capable of exerting up to 400 kg of force while maintaining a precision of ±0.8 mm.
  • Automatic exchange of functions both in the robot head and on the mobile platform.
